5 TIPS FOR GETTING STARTED WITH METRC

WHY METRC COMPLIANCE MATTERS

Every licensed cannabis cultivator must adhere to its state's specific regulatory requirements for reporting inventory and sales. This means license holders are required to report all activities, actions, and updates from seed to sale. Many states use the METRC system to record this information. If you are not familiar with METRC, you can learn more about what METRC is and how it works here.

As an owner of a licensed cannabis cultivation facility in a state that uses METRC, you are responsible for meeting these requirements with 100% accuracy. Inaccurate data or failure to report could lead to large fines and/or shutting down operations.

1. REGISTER WITH METRC

Before you get started with METRC, you'll want to register with your state's regulatory agency and get your state issued license. Each state has its own regulatory agency and the process and requirements for attaining a license can vary from state to state.

Once you are licensed in your state, a link to register on the METRC website should be sent to you. You will need to complete some training with METRC before receiving your login credentials.

You can find METRC's New Business Training by:

  1. Visiting the Partners page on the METRC website
  2. Clicking on your state or state name
  3. Finding the "Welcome To METRC's Training Resources" section
  4. Clicking on "New Business Training"

2. METRC ACCOUNT SETUP

To set up your METRC account for the most success, we suggest a two-part process.

Part One is determining who on your team will be working in METRC and what your internal reporting process will be. Once you have determined which employee(s) need to access METRC, add them to your user profile and set their permissions accordingly.

Part Two is making sure you have a plan around reporting actions. We suggest reporting at the time of each action, or at minimum daily reporting, but it's really up to you. If you have the staff for it, you may even want someone to double check and make sure everything is being reported and done correctly.

3. GET YOUR METRC TAGS

There are two different types of METRC tags, package and plant. METRC package tags are for groups of product or items so that they can be prepared for transfer or sale. METRC plant tags are only used by cultivators and help identify where plants are in their growth cycle.

If you log into METRC and then visit the Admin menu, you are able to notify METRC that you are ready to purchase your tags. For cultivators, you will need to order plant tags too. Keep in mind that you will need a METRC plant tag for every single plant you'll have at your facility once it reaches the required size or growth phase.

Upon delivery of your METRC tags, make sure you receive your new tags on your "Tag Orders" page in METRC. It is important that you complete this step and mark the tags as received in METRC before you start using them. You will first need your package tags to start your initial inventory. For cultivators, you will need to transfer seeds or clones to your license in METRC using package tags too. This step is timeboxed, so make sure you complete this step as soon as possible so you aren't rushing later or even too late.

Each item will have its own RFID-enabled METRC tag containing a Unique Identifier (UID) for that specific plant or package with a scannable barcode which can be used to find information like the facility growin the plant and cultivar information.

5. TRACKING AND REPORTING

Once your plants are at your state's required size or growth phase to be tagged, you're ready to start the seed-to-sale tracking process and start reporting to METRC. Luckily, you have chosen StashStock to help with this so the entire process will be much easier.

Our RFID-enabled CannaScanner allows you to scan entire rooms to pick up your METRC plant tags. From there, you can update stages, change rooms, find any missing plants, or even kill plants if necessary. Since our CannaScanner is fully METRC integrated, you can send reports of all actions that you've taken directly to METRC.

When your plants are ready to harvest, our CannaScale organically fits into your cultivation process. You'll have the ability to weigh wet plants in their natural drying position, reducing damage and the risk of contamination, and without any manual entry required. Just scan the METRC plant tag using either a barcode scanner or, even easier, our CannaScanner's RFID feature. Strains are always properly batched together with no duplicates. The CannaScale application then audits the harvest to make sure every plant is accounted for before you choose to submit and upload data directly to METRC or email harvest data to anyone on your team.

If for some reason you have not chosen StashStock to help you, you will have to manually keep track of and submit each plant stage, room change, weight, etc. directly to METRC manually. Although this is possible, keep in mind that it is very time-consuming and leaves a lot of room for errors and duplicates.
